Finding a time that works for people in several countries is mostly arithmetic that nobody wants to do in their head. Add the places your people live in, choose a date, and the timeline shows each place's clock along the same day, which hours fall inside working hours, and where everyone overlaps. Up to 8 places; the first one is your own and the timeline is laid out in its time. Click or drag along the timeline to choose a time, then copy the plan, or copy a link that opens exactly this plan for anyone you send it to.

How the planner works out the overlap

Each place has a working day, nine in the morning to five in the afternoon unless you change it. The planner walks through the day of your first place in quarter-hour steps, asks what time it is in every other place at each step, and marks the steps where every place is inside its working day. Those steps are joined into the windows listed under the timeline. Because it works in quarter hours rather than whole hours, places such as Kolkata (UTC+5:30) and Kathmandu (UTC+5:45) line up correctly instead of being rounded to the nearest hour.

Daylight saving time

Clocks do not change on the same date everywhere. The United States moves its clocks on a different weekend from Europe, so for a couple of weeks each spring and autumn the gap between New York and London is an hour different from the rest of the year. Some countries, including India, Japan and most of Africa, never change their clocks at all. The planner asks your browser's time zone database for the real rule on the date you choose, so a meeting planned months ahead uses the clock that will be in force on that day, not today's.

On the day clocks go forward, the day has 23 hours and one hour does not exist; on the day they go back, the day has 25 hours and one hour happens twice. The timeline shows that day's true length and says so above it.

Choosing a fair time

A time that is comfortable for one place is often midnight for another. When no window suits everybody, rotate who takes the awkward slot instead of always asking the same people, and watch the night bands: they show exactly whose evening or early morning you are using. The chosen time lists every place's clock and says which are outside working hours; the summary has the exact minutes.

Questions

Does this work without JavaScript?

Yes. The timeline, the windows and the summary are built on the server, and every control is a normal link or form; each quarter hour on the timeline is a link. With JavaScript on, the plan updates as you change it, you can drag along the timeline or use the arrow keys, and you also get buttons to copy the summary and the link.

What is in the shared link?

Only the places, the date, the working hours and the time you chose. It opens the same plan for whoever receives it. Nothing about you is stored.

Can I type a city that is not in the list?

Type the nearest large city, or the full time zone name such as America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires. Names such as Mumbai and San Francisco are recognised and mapped to the zone they use.
