MSG FROM SYSOP [70007,1187]: harrow line is open. waiting.
Pick a video from your phone or computer, choose the part you want, and download it as an animated GIF. Or open a GIF you already have and change its speed, length, shape, colours and caption. The work happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your video and your GIF are never uploaded to AppZoo or anywhere else.
How to turn a video into a GIF
- Choose a video file. Nothing is sent anywhere; the file is opened by your browser only.
- Set the start and end of the part you want, in seconds. Use the preview to check it.
- Pick a shape such as square or wide, and move or resize the crop box to frame the part of the picture you want.
- Choose a size and a frame rate. Smaller and slower means a smaller file. Lower the colour quality or turn dithering off to shrink it further.
- Press Make GIF, wait for the progress bar to finish, then download the result.
Edit a GIF
Choose Edit a GIF to open a GIF you already have, or press Edit this GIF under one you have just made. The editor opens only when you ask for it, so the page stays light until then. You can change the speed, play the GIF backwards, set how many times it repeats, keep only a run of frames, crop it, resize it, adjust brightness, contrast, saturation and hue, turn it to grayscale and add a caption, with its size, colour and place. A preview plays the edited result as you work, and when you export, the page shows the size of the file before you download it.
Frames that were see-through in the original are painted white, because the exported GIF keeps no transparency. An edited GIF is encoded again with a fresh set of 256 colours, so a very smooth gradient may look a little different from the original.
Shape, crop and bars
Choose Original to keep the video's own shape, a ready-made shape such as square, wide or tall, or Custom to draw any box you like. The crop box is the part of each frame that goes into the GIF. If you type a height that does not match the box, you choose what happens: fill the frame and trim the edges, or fit the whole picture and add bars at the sides or the top and bottom.
Your video stays on your device
Many online converters upload your video to a server, convert it there and send the GIF back. This page does not. Your browser plays the video, takes the frames you asked for, and a small encoder on this page turns them into a GIF, all on your own device. No video, frame or GIF is ever sent to AppZoo. The page runs its own code and sends nothing back.
Limits
- Video file: up to 500 MB.
- Clip length: up to 30 seconds from the part you pick.
- Size: from 50 up to 1920 pixels wide, and a height of your own from 50 to 1920. When you leave the height blank, a video that is already narrower is not enlarged.
- Frame rate: from 5 to 30 frames per second.
- Frames: up to 300 in one GIF. For example, 10 frames per second for the full 30 seconds.
- Result: a GIF that grows past 100 MB is stopped, because it would be too large for most devices to handle.
- GIF editor: a GIF file up to 50 MB with up to 300 frames, and no more than 40 million pixels in all (width times height times frames). Speed from 0.1 to 10 times, and a caption from 8 to 400 pixels.
If your clip goes over a limit, the page tells you which one and what to change: a shorter clip, a smaller size or a lower frame rate.
Which browsers work
The page is built for current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a computer, and Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone and iPad. It uses features of the browser itself to read your video, so it can open only the video formats your browser can play. MP4 files (H.264) play almost everywhere. WebM plays in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Some phone formats, such as HEVC or MOV files, play in Safari but not in other browsers. Internet Explorer and very old browsers are not supported. On phones and tablets, memory is tighter, so shorter clips and smaller sizes are more reliable.
Tips for a smaller GIF
- Keep it short. A GIF stores every frame as a picture, so size grows with each second.
- Pick a smaller width. Halving the width cuts the file to roughly a quarter.
- Lower the frame rate. Ten frames per second looks smooth enough for most reactions and demos; five suits slow scenes.
- Crop to what matters. A tight crop around the action has fewer pixels to store than the whole frame.
- Turn dithering off or lower the colour quality when the picture is flat colour, such as a screen recording.
- Choose clips with few moving parts. A steady shot compresses far better than a shaky or busy one.
Questions
Why does the page say it cannot open my video?
Your browser has to be able to play the file. Try an MP4 file, or open the page in a different browser. Videos protected by copy protection and files with no picture track cannot be opened.
Why will the editor not open my GIF?
The editor stops at the limits above and says which one your GIF went over. It also stops if the file is not a GIF or is damaged. Try trimming the GIF in another tool first, or edit a smaller copy.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format has no audio, so only the pictures are kept.
Why are the colours slightly different from my video?
A GIF can use at most 256 colours. The converter picks the 256 that suit your clip best and blends them with a light pattern so gradients still look smooth, but some fine colour detail is lost.
Can I make a GIF from a video I found online?
Only from a file on your device. Make sure you have the right to use the video.
